Exploring Investing in a Farm, Getting Recreational Access in Return

We come from farming backgrounds ourselves, but both work in the rural service sector and live with our family on a small lifestyle block.

While our mates are buying holiday homes in Twizel, we'd rather invest in somewhere where we could go camp, take the horses, go mountain biking, fishing etc. It'd be even better if our relationship with the landowners, in time, allowed us to give them a hand at times like weaning and tailing, allowing our kids to get amongst the upbringing we both had.

We're not sure how an arrangement like this might work, but we're interested to learn if there's appetite for something like it from any landowners out there. It could even be that, in time, and if it is working out, we could build a DOC style hut on the property somewhere that could be for shared use, but that we own those improvements.

This would have to be a legal agreement that we'd all get advice about. We'd need confidence that our investment was protected, and that there be exit clauses agreed ahead of time for both parties if it just didn't pan out. It goes without saying that the agreement between us and the landowners would be mutually made, in full respect of the farm's system and operation, and that communication would be prioritised.
